Gunther Rost

Gunther Rost is professor of organ, head of Church Music and Organ Studies and of the Center for Organ Research at the University of Arts in Graz. Among his numerous international awards are the Leipzig Bach Prize or prizes from the ION Competition Nuremberg and the Dallas International Organ Competition, a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) and the Bavarian State Award for the Advancement of the Arts.

The artist has released numerous recordings for organ solo and with orchestra in an extensive discography and on the Internet, including key works of the piano literature (Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, etc.) as well as the complete organ works of Petr Eben, together with e. g. the great German reciter Gert Westphal and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.

Solo concerts have taken him to such venues as the concert halls of Vienna and Berlin, the Philharmonic Hall and the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, the Rheingau Music Festival and the Leipzig Bach Festival.

From 2012 to 2014 he was Organist in Residence with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.
Gunther Rost has also worked with artists and ensembles such as Christoph Prégardien, Elīna Garanča, the Choir of the Bavarian State Radio or the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. In 2018, he founded the 4D Orchestra, followed in 2023 by 4D Baroque, who play on period instruments.

In Styria, Rost is committed to increasing public awareness of the instrument, for example through the visual and acoustic documentation of valuable instruments or in the Festival Orgelfrühling Steiermark.

As a guest, Rost has taught at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music London, the Chopin Academy Warsaw and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow.
At the Center for Organ Research, his work includes the further development of the organ and the critical illumination of historical playing instructions.
